Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterised by hyperglycaemia resulting from defective insulin secretion, defective insulin action, or a combination of both. According to the WHO, approximately 14% of adults aged 18 years and above were living with diabetes globally in 2022, and diabetes has been projected to become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The significant and growing economic burden of diabetes further highlights the seriousness of this global health challenge.

However, there are reasons for optimism. Early identification and management of risk factors, combined with appropriate glycaemic control and comprehensive management of associated conditions, can delay disease progression and help prevent or reduce complications. Achieving this requires healthcare professionals to have the knowledge, clinical skills, and confidence to provide safe, effective, and evidence-based care to people living with diabetes.

To support this need, BMJ Group have partnered with the Royal College of Physicians, London, to provide high-quality educational support for healthcare professionals in Asia through a six-month certification course in Diabetes. The programme combines evidence-based peer reviewed e-learning with virtual training under the guidance of experienced subject experts. Designed with a focus on the needs of clinicians in the region, the course integrates theoretical knowledge with practical clinical application, covering diabetes management, associated comorbidities, patient safety, and effective clinical decision-making.

The programme aims to equip physicians with the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to diagnose and manage diabetes effectively, address associated comorbidities, and ultimately deliver safer, more effective, and patient-centred care.
